Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common questions about PrintPort3D.
Getting started
Do I need a 3D printer to use PrintPort3D?
No! That's the whole point. PrintPort3D handles all printing, packaging, and shipping for you. You just upload designs and set prices—we do the rest.
How much does it cost to get started?
$0 upfront. There are no monthly fees, subscriptions, or setup costs. You only pay production costs when orders are fulfilled. Perfect for testing the waters risk-free.
Do I need an existing store/website?
Not required, but recommended. PrintPort3D integrates with Shopify, Etsy, WooCommerce, and other platforms. You can also use our custom order form to sell directly without a store.
How long does it take to launch my first product?
10-15 minutes. Upload your STL file, set a price, and publish. If you're connecting to an existing store, add another 5-10 minutes for integration setup.
Can I sell products I didn't design?
Yes, if you have permission. Use models from sites like Thingiverse, MyMiniFactory, or purchase commercial licenses. Never sell someone else's design without proper licensing—it's both illegal and against our terms.
Products & printing
What file formats do you accept?
STL is the primary format (most common for 3D printing). We also support OBJ, 3MF, and STEP files. Files are automatically validated when you upload.
What materials can I print in?
Currently PLA, PETG, and ABS in 15+ colors. PLA is most popular (eco-friendly, great finish). PETG is stronger and heat-resistant. ABS is durable but requires special setup (surcharge applies).
Is there a size limit?
Yes, 300mm × 300mm × 400mm (roughly 12" × 12" × 16"). Most consumer items fit comfortably. For larger items, split your model into parts that snap/glue together.
How long does printing take?
Depends on size and complexity. Small items (keychains, figurines): 1-3 hours. Medium items (planters, desk organizers): 4-8 hours. Large/complex items: 12-24 hours. Plus 1-2 days for queue time and post-processing.
What if my file has errors?
Our system auto-checks for common issues (non-manifold edges, holes, etc.). If errors are found, you'll see a report with suggestions. For complex issues, contact support—we can often fix files for free.
Can customers customize products (add text, names, etc.)?
Yes! Use our customization feature when creating products. Customers enter text, choose options, and we generate the personalized STL automatically. Popular for name plates, ornaments, and gifts.
Pricing & profit
How much can I actually make?
Depends on your prices and volume. Most sellers aim for 50-70% profit margins. Example: Sell a product for $30, costs are $12, you keep $18 (60% margin). High-volume sellers can make thousands per month part-time.
How do I know what to charge?
Start with 2-3x your production cost. Research similar items on Etsy/Amazon to see market rates. Test different prices and track conversion—data beats guessing. See our pricing guide for strategies.
Are there any hidden fees?
Nope. The production cost shown is exactly what you pay. No transaction fees, no platform commissions, no surprise charges. What you see is what you get.
When do I get paid?
Depends on your payment processor. If using Stripe/PayPal on your own store, you're paid immediately when customers order (you then pay PrintPort3D for fulfillment). If using our hosted checkout, payouts are weekly.
Can I offer discounts or run sales?
Absolutely. Set sale prices in your store platform (Shopify, Etsy, etc.). PrintPort3D always charges the same production cost—discounts come out of your margin, not ours. Plan accordingly.
Orders & fulfillment
How fast are orders fulfilled?
Most orders ship within 3-5 business days. Print time (1-3 days) + post-processing (1 day) + shipping prep. Rush orders available for additional fee (24-48 hour fulfillment).
Do you ship internationally?
No, we currently only ship within the United States. This allows us to provide fast, reliable, and economical delivery for all customers.
What if a package is lost or damaged?
All shipments are insured. File a claim in your dashboard, and we'll send a replacement at no cost to you or the customer. Claims typically resolve in 2-3 business days.
Can customers track their orders?
Yes. They receive tracking info automatically when orders ship. Tracking works for all domestic and most international shipments. Updates in real-time via carrier API.
What about returns and refunds?
You set your own return policy. If you approve a refund, initiate it in your dashboard. Customer gets refunded, and you're credited for the production cost. Most sellers have 30-day return windows.
Do orders ever fail or get stuck?
Rarely. Print failures happen <1% of the time and are auto-requeued at no extra cost. Orders may pause for manual review if we detect file issues, address problems, or shipping cost anomalies—you'll get an alert to resolve.
Technical & support
How do I contact support?
Three ways: (1) Live chat widget (bottom-right of screen, instant response during business hours), (2) Email support@printport3d.com, or (3) Support tickets in your dashboard. Average response time: <4 hours.
Do you have an API?
PrintPort3D uses API integrations for store connectivity (Shopify, Etsy, WooCommerce webhooks) and printing via Printago. There is no public customer-facing REST API at this time. For custom integration needs, contact support to discuss options.
Can I white-label your service?
Not yet, but coming soon for enterprise customers. Currently, shipping labels and packing slips include PrintPort3D branding. Reach out if you're interested in white-label fulfillment—we're building it based on demand.
Is my data secure?
Yes. All data encrypted in transit (TLS 1.3) and at rest (AES-256). Payment info processed through Stripe (PCI-DSS Level 1 compliant). We never store full credit card numbers. Regular security audits and backups.
What if I have a feature request?
We love feedback! Use the feedback form in your dashboard or email feedback@printport3d.com. We review all requests monthly and prioritize based on user votes and business impact.
Business & legal
Do I need a business license?
Depends on your location and volume. In the US, most states don't require a license for online sales under a certain threshold. Check your local regulations. Many sellers start as sole proprietors and formalize later.
Do I need to collect sales tax?
In the US, yes—if you have nexus in states where customers are located. Platforms like Shopify can handle this automatically. Consult a tax professional for specifics. PrintPort3D doesn't collect tax on your behalf (you're the seller).
Who owns the customer data?
You do. PrintPort3D accesses customer info (name, address) only to fulfill orders. We don't market to your customers or sell data. You remain the merchant of record.
What if I want to close my account?
You can close anytime—no contracts or cancellation fees. Export your data first (orders, products, customer info). Pending orders will complete, then your account deactivates. Simple as that.
Are there any restrictions on what I can sell?
Yes. Prohibited items include: weapons/weapon parts, illegal items, adult content, counterfeit goods, medical devices requiring FDA approval, and anything violating IP rights. Full list in our Terms of Service.
Quality & materials
What quality can customers expect?
High-quality FDM (fused deposition modeling) prints. Layer height: 0.2mm standard, 0.1mm for fine details. Expect visible layer lines (that's the 3D print aesthetic). All prints inspected before shipping. Defect rate <2%.
Can you do different colors for different parts?
Not in a single print (multi-material printers coming soon). For now, single-color prints only. Customers wanting multiple colors need separate pieces they assemble, or you can offer painting as an add-on service.
Do you offer painting or finishing services?
Basic finishing (support removal, light sanding) is included. Premium services like painting, clear coating, or vapor smoothing are available for additional fees. Contact sales for bulk pricing on finishing.
What about support structures?
We add supports automatically for overhangs >45°. Supports are removed during post-processing. Design tip: minimize supports where possible to reduce costs and improve surface finish.
Are prints food-safe?
No. While PLA is technically food-safe material, FDM printing creates tiny gaps where bacteria can grow. Don't market prints as food-contact safe unless you're sealing them with food-safe epoxy (your responsibility, not ours).
