Materials for Parts People Handle Every Day
Heat against knocks for every plastic on our rack, from the manufacturer’s own data — and the temperature a dashboard really reaches.

A part people handle every day fails in one of two ways: it softens somewhere warm, or it cracks when it is dropped. For anything that lives in a car, choose ABS, PETG-CF or PETG, because a dashboard in the sun reaches about 69°C and PLA starts to give way below 60°C. For anything that is dropped or knocked, PETG, PETG-CF and ABS take roughly half as much again as PLA before they crack. For anything that has to bend, use TPU. Here is every plastic on our rack, measured.
It will live
Impact measured
Heat deflection at 0.45 MPa (ISO 75) and unnotched impact (ISO 179), from Bambu Lab’s data sheets. HDT is where a test bar bends under a set load, a line to stay well below, not a promise. TPU 90A bends instead of cracking and sits off this chart: 124 kJ/m², stretching over 650% before it breaks.

The number most people miss
How a part is printed matters as much as what it is printed in.
Across the layersEvery rigid material we stock is weaker across its layers than along them — PETG-CF drops from 41 to 11 kJ/m². Orient the part so the knock lands along the layers. Across them, plain PLA is the toughest.
Match the plastic to the life it will have
- On a desk or shelf
- PLA Basic, Matte, Silk+ or Wood. The best finishes and the widest colour range. Keep them out of hot cars and sunny dashboards.
- Handled and dropped
- PETG or PETG-CF. Tougher along the layers than PLA and better with heat. PETG-CF adds stiffness and a matte, fibre finish that hides layer lines.
- In a car, near heat
- ABS, softening around 87°C, or PETG-CF at 74°C. Both clear a dashboard in the sun, where PLA does not.
- Bends, grips, cushions
- TPU 90A. It stretches more than six times its length before breaking, so it flexes where anything rigid would snap: cases, feet, bumpers, straps.
- Outside
- ABS or PETG. Bambu lists UV resistance for both ABS and PETG Translucent, and neither softens in summer sun the way PLA can. For years outdoors, test a part first.
What the numbers can and cannot tell you
Heat deflection temperature is the point where a standard test bar bends under a light, fixed load. It is a good way to rank plastics against each other, and a line to stay comfortably below, not a guarantee that a part survives right up to it. A thick part behaves better than the thin test bar. A part carrying weight, like a phone mount, behaves worse. Impact strength works the same way: it ranks toughness, and your part’s shape decides the rest.
That is why the fastest test is a real one. Order a single part in two materials, leave them on the dashboard for an afternoon, and drop them on the floor. The make cost of most everyday parts is a few dollars; our Make-Cost Index prices thirty-six of them live. For choosing by product type, see the materials guide.
FAQ
ABS or PETG-CF. A dashboard in direct sun averaged about 69°C (157°F) in an Arizona State University study; Bambu’s data sheets put ABS’s heat deflection at 87°C and PETG-CF’s at 74°C, while PLA’s is 57°C.
Among rigid plastics we stock, PETG-CF, ABS and PETG Translucent have the highest unnotched impact strength along the layers, about 37 to 41 kJ/m² against 27 for PLA Basic. TPU 90A is far tougher again because it bends rather than breaks.
For desk, shelf and home items kept away from heat, yes: it is stiff, takes the best finishes and comes in the most colours. Avoid it for parts that live in cars or take repeated drops.
They are built in layers, and the bond between layers is weaker than the material along them. Bambu’s own figures put impact strength across the layers at between a fifth and a half of the along-layer value for the rigid plastics we stock. Across the layers, plain PLA is actually the toughest of them.
