Etsy Production Partners for 3D Prints: The Rules, Quoted
What Etsy’s own policy says about outsourcing 3D printing, the requirement most sellers miss, and the setup step by step.

Etsy lets you have your 3D-printed listings made by a production partner, as long as three things are true: the item is your own original design, you disclose the partner on the listings they make, and each listing says accurately where it ships from. Etsy’s own help pages name “keeping up with order volume” as one of the reasons sellers use one. Below is what the rules actually say, quoted, and the setup, step by step.
The rule in one line
Outsourcing is allowed on Etsy. Hiding it is what breaks the rules.
Where it bitesBoth “made by” and “designed by” 3D-printed items must be your own original design — licensed models from a model site do not qualify either way.
What Etsy’s policy says
Etsy sorts every item into four categories in its Creativity Standards: made by a seller, designed by a seller, handpicked by a seller, and sourced by a seller. A 3D print you make at home is “made by a seller”:
“Items produced using computerized tools: Physical items that a seller produced in their personal shop or home, using computerized tools such as a laser printer, 3D printer, CNC or Cricut machine. These items must be produced based on a seller’s original design and are often personalized or customized to a buyer’s specification.”
— Etsy’s Creativity Standards, “Made by a seller” (last updated June 10, 2025)
The same design printed by someone else moves to “designed by a seller”, which covers production partners:
“Sellers’ original designs produced by a production partner: Original designs created by a seller and produced with the assistance of a production partner. Sellers must disclose that an item is made by a production partner, and provide accurate information about where the item will ship from.”
— Etsy’s Creativity Standards, “Designed by a seller”
Etsy’s help article on production partners gives the reasons sellers use them, and one of them is exactly the situation of a maker who has run out of printer time:
“Business growth: Your business is growing, and you need help keeping up with order volume, or you’ve outgrown your current production space.”
— Etsy Help, “Working with Production Partners on Etsy”
The requirement most sellers miss: it has to be your design
Read the two policy passages above together. Whether you print it yourself or a partner prints it, a 3D printed item on Etsy has to be based on your own original design. Neither category, as Etsy writes it, covers printing a model someone else designed, even one you’ve bought a commercial licence for.
That matters before you think about outsourcing at all. A shop built on licensed models from model sites has a problem with Etsy’s policy whoever prints them. If that’s you, the options are to sell your own designs on Etsy, or to sell licensed models on your own site, such as Shopify, where the licence allows it. Our guide to what you can and can’t sell covers the licensing side.
Designs made with AI from your own prompt count too: Etsy lists “seller-prompted AI creations” under “designed by a seller”, as long as the listing says the item was created with AI. Etsy’s own pages are the authority — if you are unsure whether a design qualifies, ask Etsy support before you list it.
Who counts as a production partner
“A production partner is a company or individual (who’s not part of your Etsy shop) that physically produces items based on your own, original designs from start to finish, such as a printing service, an apparel producer, or an engraver.”
— Etsy Help, “Working with Production Partners on Etsy”
A 3D-print fulfilment service that prints your file, packs it and ships it is a production partner. Etsy’s own examples list print-on-demand services as one type. The same help article is just as clear about who doesn’t count:

How to add a production partner
Etsy’s steps, from its help article. Do this on etsy.com: the Etsy Seller app can’t add a new partner.
- 1
Open the partner settings
Sign in, go to Shop Manager, choose Settings, then Partners you work with. - 2
Add the partner
Choose Add a new production partner and enter the partner’s name. You can show the name to buyers, or hide it and use a public descriptive title instead, such as “3D printing service”. - 3
Enter where they are
In Location, enter the partner’s city and state. For PrintPort3D, that’s Orange, California. - 4
Describe how you work together
The About production partner field is public. Say what they do for you, for example that they print, pack and ship your designs. The More about your partnership answers are for Etsy only. - 5
Save, then attach it to listings
Choose Save partner. Then add it to each listing it makes: in the listing editor under Production partners, or in bulk from Listings → select the listings → Editing options → Change production partners.
Adding us as your production partner · what to type
Shop Manager → Settings → Partners you work with
- Partner name
PrintPort3D
Or hide the name and use a public title such as “3D printing service”.
- Public title (if you hide the name)
3D printing service
- Location
Orange, California
City and state, as Etsy asks.
- About production partner (public)
A 3D printing service in Orange, California that prints, assembles, checks and ships my original designs to order.
Buyers can read this in your shop’s About section.
- Shipping origin on each moved listing
Orange, California, United States
The step most sellers forget.
- Processing time on each moved listing
3 business days
Our published ship target — set at least this.
After you add it
Etsy’s help article lists three follow-ups. They’re quick, and the first one is the one people forget.
- Update the shipping origin on each moved listing to where the partner ships from.
- Set the processing time on those listings to match the partner’s turnaround, not your own.
- Fill in your shop’s About section. Buyers see your production partners there.
- Check the listing photos against Etsy’s listing image requirements.
The processing-time step is ours, not Etsy’s, but it follows from the rule about accurate information — the card above has the figure to use.
Outsourcing part of your shop without breaking the rules
Many makers want to keep printing most listings themselves and send only some out. That works, as long as you decide listing by listing, not order by order.
Why not order by order
A listing that’s sometimes made by you at home and sometimes by a partner in another state can’t be accurate about who makes it or where it ships from. At least some of the time, it would be telling buyers something that isn’t true, which is exactly what the disclosure rule exists to stop.
Listing by listing
Pick the listings the partner will make. Attach the partner to those, update their shipping origin and processing time, and leave the rest exactly as they are. Every order for a moved listing goes to the partner, and every order for the others stays with you.
With us, orders arrive by SKU. Build the listings you are moving as products with the same SKUs and only those orders come here; everything else is never printed or charged. We print, assemble, check, pack and ship from Orange, California, and remake failed prints at our cost. How overflow works, or find how many listings to move with the capacity calculator.
FAQ
Yes, if the item is your own original design, you disclose the production partner on the listings they make, and each listing gives accurate information about where it ships from. Etsy lists these under “designed by a seller”.
Yes. A service that prints and ships your design is a production partner under Etsy’s definition. Add it under Shop Manager → Settings → Partners you work with, and attach it to the listings it produces.
Etsy’s Creativity Standards require 3D-printed items, whether you print them or a partner does, to be based on the seller’s own original design. A model designed by someone else does not fit either category as Etsy writes it, even with a commercial licence. If you are unsure about a particular design, ask Etsy support before listing it.
Buyers can see information about your production partners in your shop’s About section. You can show the partner’s name or use a descriptive title such as “3D printing service” instead.
It is hard to do honestly, because the listing’s maker and ship-from information would be wrong some of the time. Move whole listings instead: the partner makes every order for the listings you move, and you make every order for the rest.
Your design. Disclosed properly. Made by us.
Match the listing by SKU and every order is printed, checked, assembled if you ask, and shipped from Orange, California under your name.
