The SKU link
How the SKU connects your store listings to your PrintPort catalog, and how to resolve orders that fail to match.
5 min read
Every order that flows from your store into PrintPort is matched by its SKU. The SKU is the only link between what a customer bought and what PrintPort makes. When it matches your catalog exactly, orders route themselves. When it does not, the order waits for you.
Overview
A SKU is the short code you assign to a product to identify it. In PrintPort it does one specific job: it connects a listing on your store to a product in your PrintPort catalog.
The flow works as follows. You upload a Design, turn it into a Product that carries a name, a SKU, and a make cost — but no retail price — and then create the listing on your own store. PrintPort does not create or push listings on your behalf. You build the listing and set your product's exact PrintPort SKU on it.
When an order arrives, PrintPort reads the SKU on the ordered item and finds the one product in your catalog with the same SKU. That single match is the entire handoff: it tells PrintPort which files to print, and in which material, for that sale.
How SKUs are stored
When you assign a SKU in the Composer, the field forces every letter to uppercase as you type, and the server applies the same conversion when it saves. So dragon-01 becomes DRAGON-01. PrintPort always displays and stores your SKU in uppercase.
You do not need to copy that exact case onto your store listing. When PrintPort matches an order, it uppercases both sides and trims any leading or trailing spaces before comparing. A lowercase, mixed-case, or space-padded SKU on your store still matches your uppercase PrintPort SKU. The characters themselves are what must agree.
A SKU must also be unique within your catalog. Two products cannot share one, and PrintPort blocks a duplicate when you try to save it. A SKU can be up to 80 characters long.
Matching rules
Case and outer spaces are ignored; characters are not
DRAGON-01, dragon-01, and Dragon-01 all match the same product. Every character must still match. A different character is a different SKU.Suppose your PrintPort product SKU is DRAGON-01. The table below shows the result for several versions of the SKU on your store listing.
| SKU on your store listing | Result | Why |
|---|---|---|
DRAGON-01 | Matches | Same characters. |
dragon-01 | Matches | Case is ignored; both sides are uppercased before comparing. |
Dragon-01 | Matches | Mixed case canonicalizes to the same SKU. |
DRAGON-01 | Matches | A leading or trailing space is trimmed before comparing. |
DRAGON_01 | No match | An underscore is a different character than a hyphen. |
DRAGON - 01 | No match | Spaces in the middle are part of the SKU and are not trimmed. |
| (nothing) | No match | No SKU on the listing at all. |

The remaining causes of a mismatch are a genuinely different character (an underscore where you intended a hyphen, or a typo), a stray space in the middle of the code, or no SKU on the listing at all. Case and outer spaces do not affect matching.
Why an order shows “No product match”
When an incoming order's SKU does not match a live product, PrintPort cannot make it on its own. The item receives a No product match chip, and the order lands in the Action required tab of your Orders page.
This happens for one of a few reasons:
- A different code. The listing SKU contains a typo, a different character (such as an underscore instead of a hyphen), a space in the middle of the code, or is simply a different string than your product's SKU.
- No SKU. The listing has no SKU on it at all.
- Not live. The SKU is correct, but the product is a draft or archived (see below).
The fix is on your store, not in PrintPort. Case and outer spaces are handled for you, so a mismatch means the characters themselves differ. Correct the SKU on the store listing so its characters match your PrintPort SKU.
- 1
Copy your PrintPort SKU
Open the product in your Catalog and click its SKU to copy it. Copying the SKU rather than retyping it is the most reliable way to get every character right. - 2
Open the listing on your store
Go to the platform the order came from (any store you've connected) and open that product's listing. - 3
Paste the SKU into the listing's SKU field
Match the characters exactly. Case and any leading or trailing spaces do not matter, but avoid spaces in the middle of the code. Replace whatever was there. - 4
Save the listing
New orders for that listing then auto-match. Correcting the source ensures the mismatch does not recur.
Drafts and archived products do not auto-match
Even a correct SKU will not match automatically if the product is not live. A product auto-fulfills only when it is active — not a draft, not archived, not deleted. An order for a draft or archived SKU arrives unmatched, the same as a mismatch.
If the SKU looks correct but the order still did not match, confirm that the product is Live and not in Draft. You can set it live from the product drawer. See Manage your catalog for the draft-versus-live toggle.
Mapping an unmatched order
Correcting the store listing prevents future mismatches, but it does not resolve an order that is already stuck. For that, PrintPort provides Map product, a one-time way to point an unmatched item at the product it should have matched.
- 1
Open the stuck order
In Orders, open the order carrying the No product match chip. - 2
Select “Map product”
The mapper opens with each unmatched line item listed. - 3
Choose the correct product
For every unmatched item, search your catalog and select the product it should have matched. Only live products appear here; if the correct one is not listed, publish it first. - 4
Review the estimated charge
PrintPort shows the estimated make cost it will charge your card for the mapped items. - 5
Approve and make
Confirming maps the item, charges your saved card, and sends the order into production.
Approve and make charges your card
Mapping also teaches PrintPort that SKU, so a later order carrying the same code can match on its own. A matching SKU on the listing remains the better long-term fix: mapping resolves one order, while a corrected listing prevents the next one.
Quick reference
- SKUthe only join
- The short code that connects one store listing to one PrintPort product. Nothing else ties the two together.
- Stored uppercase
- PrintPort converts your SKU to uppercase as you type and again on save. Your store listing does not have to copy that case; matching ignores it.
- Character match
- Matching uppercases both sides and trims outer spaces, so case and leading or trailing spaces do not matter. Every character does. A different character, or a space in the middle, is a different SKU.
- Uniquemax 80 chars
- A SKU can belong to only one product in your catalog. Duplicates are blocked on save.
- Live only
- Draft, archived, and deleted products do not auto-match; their orders arrive as “No product match.”
