Add hardware
Add non-printed parts — MagSafe modules, magnets, threaded inserts, and screws — to a product.
4 min read
Some products need more than plastic. A phone case needs a MagSafe module, a lid needs magnets, and a bracket needs threaded inserts and screws. You add these non-printed parts to a product in the composer, and PrintPort installs them before the order ships.
What hardware is
Hardware — the app calls these components — is any non-printed part that PrintPort keeps in stock and builds into your product. You choose parts from the stocked catalog by quantity. You never source or ship the parts yourself.
Commonly stocked parts include:
- MagSafe modulesstocked
- The magnetic ring array that snaps a case or accessory onto a MagSafe phone or charger.
- Magnetsstocked
- Small round magnets for lids, closures, and swappable panels.
- Threaded insertsstocked
- Heat-set brass inserts that give printed plastic a durable, reusable screw thread.
- Screwsstocked
- Fasteners to hold printed parts together or mount them to something else.

Add hardware to a product
Hardware lives inside the product composer on the 1 · Build step, the same step where you choose your design files and their materials. The section is collapsed by default and expands when you open it or when a product already has parts on it.
- 1
Open the composer
In your Catalog, start a new product or edit an existing one to open the composer on the 1 · Build step. - 2
Expand Hardware
Below your design files and materials, open the Hardware section. - 3
Find a part and add it by quantity
Search for the part (for example m3 insert or 6x3 magnet) or open a category such as Fasteners or Magnets. Then use the + / − steppers to set how many of each part go into one unit: one MagSafe module, two magnets, four inserts, and so on. Parts you have added stay listed at the top, and each one appears as a priced line on the receipt rail immediately. - 4
Save
Name the product and assign its SKU on the 2 · List it step, then Save as draft or Save & publish. Your hardware is saved with the product.
Per-product limits
Hardware is optional and is not part of the publish checklist, so a product with no parts saves without issue. The only requirement is that a product contain at least one priced item: a design file, a component, or both.
How hardware is priced
A component adds its part price to your make cost and nothing more. Printed parts carry a time-based labor charge, but hardware is not printed, so it adds no labor. You pay for the part, and for assembly only if you ask us to fit it.
- Make costcharged to your card
material + labor + hardware + assembly. Adding a component raises this by the part price, plus $1.00 for the part if the product is assembled.- Labor on hardwarenone
- None. The $3 per print-hour charge applies to printing, never to a stocked part.
- Fitting itwith assembly
- Answer Assemble it when the composer asks and we fit every part, $1.00 each. Answer Ship it loose and the hardware goes in the box with the prints.
Every part price comes from PrintPort’s stocked inventory and appears on the live receipt rail as you build, so you see the effect before you save. On save, PrintPort recomputes the full make cost on the server, including hardware, so the number shown on your product is the number your card is charged.
These are example figures; your real part prices appear on the receipt rail. The MagSafe ring adds its price and leaves labor untouched; assembly is what has it arrive fitted ($12.75 without it, ring loose in the box). For the full breakdown of make cost, see Costs & pricing.
Hardware raises your break-even
How parts are installed
You never handle the hardware. When you choose Assemble it for the product, PrintPort prints your design and installs the components you specified at the pack station — pressing in inserts, seating magnets, and fitting the MagSafe module — before the box is sealed and shipped. Assembly is $1.00 per part in one unit, printed parts and hardware alike. Without it, the hardware is packed loose beside the prints for your customer to fit.

Designing around hardware in Studio
When you build in Studio, the AI knows the real dimensions of the parts we stock. Ask for a case that snaps onto MagSafe and Studio sizes the pocket to the actual module rather than an estimate, so the design and the hardware fit together on the first print.

Adding a component is a small change with a real cost, so review the receipt rail before you save. Everything else about the product — files, materials, SKU — works the same with or without hardware. See Manage your catalog to edit parts later.
